AREA ATTRACTIONS

Location

With a population of about 70,000, Asheville lies in the Western North Carolina mountains, tucked between the ranges of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Vibrant and wholly unique, the city has an energy all its own, offering visitors a blend of art and nature, culture and mountain flavor.

The Weather
The resort is located at an elevation of 2,100 feet above sea level. With an average high of 67 degrees and an average low of 46 degrees, Asheville offers a mild climate in every season. Buffered by the surrounding mountains, the area also has less precipitation than any other city east of the Mississippi.

Asheville's downtown is located only five minutes from our resort. With its colorful sights and historic buildings, the city features more Art Deco architecture than any other southeastern city outside Miami Beach. The downtown is best explored on foot, its streets lined with an inviting collection of restaurants, bookstores and shops.

Away from downtown, adventure abounds. From music festivals to hikes to scenic peaks, from whitewater rafting to gallery strolls, there is something here for just about everybody.

Today's visitors find a city steeped in history. Step back in time and experience Gilded Age elegance at America's largest home, George Vanderbilt's 250-room Biltmore House. Relive the Victorian era at the circa 1840 Smith-McDowell House-Museum, Asheville's oldest home. Explore the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, the acclaimed author's boyhood home and the inspiration for his novel "Look Homeward, Angel."

Much of the architecture in downtown was constructed by the same craftspeople who built Biltmore House. Asheville boasts more Art Deco architecture than any southeastern city other than Miami Beach. Get a sampling by viewing the Attractions and Sightseeing Picture Slideshow.

Cool Places:

"This year, editors at Frommer's Travel Guides and Frommers.com scoured the globe and polled our stable of authors and experts to identify a mix of surprising, thriving, or emerging travel destinations," said Kelly Regan, editorial director of Frommer's.

In its praise of Asheville, the Frommer's list states:

"Located in the Smoky Mountains, Asheville is a small college town with a thriving arts, culture, and gay & lesbian scene. It is home to the Biltmore Estate, the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, and Carl Sandburg's birthplace in nearby Flat Rock. Recently, Asheville has been drawing literati and celebrities who had gravitated to New Orleans as a hub of culture. With the Blue Ridge Parkway nearby, the area is also great for driving tours and shopping trips to numerous crafts and pottery shops (we suggest picking up a hand-made broom)."
